May 15th

Hello Parents,

As we head into the Victoria Day long weekend, we can say we had a busy week! I will also say that this week was a success due entirely to the community that volunteers and supports our learners and staff. We had hundreds of students learn some basic bike skills during our Bike Rodeo, and had their bike and helmets checked for safety. We had all the grade 6’s creating the concrete handprints that will be their legacy at the school. We had fields trip to Brennan Park for skating and swim lessons. We had our second session of rugby with the Squamish Axemen. And we also had one of our students be selected to be the Mayor for the Day, complete with a ride to school on a fire truck and a pizza lunch for their class!  As we look ahead to next week, a reminder that class photos will be on Tuesday morning, and all Grade 6’s will be heading to Don Ross Middle School for a tour next Friday.

I wanted to take a minute to discuss 3D printed items being brought to school. We are seeing more and more students bring 3D printed objects from home. While there is great value and learning to be had from the design and use of 3D printers, we are seeing some negative impacts in our school. We have seen a number of students print items that are considered weapons (“brass” knuckles, a butterfly knife, a sword, etc…). We are also seeing items being brought to school that students are calling “fidgets” but are essentially toys. Lastly, we are also seeing students selling these items on school property to their classmates. While I commend their entrepreneurial spirit, this is not a marketplace and students should not be buying and selling anything during the school day.

If your family owns a 3D printer, please have a discussion with your child about appropriate items to print. We would ask that these printed items remain at school, as they are proving to be more of a distraction than anything else. Thank you for your time and understanding.

School Meal Program: Zero Waste Pilot!

Just in time for Earth Day on April 22, Brackendale Elementary is proud to be the first school to pilot a zero-waste lunch program as part of the School Meal Program, in partnership with Squamish CAN. Meals will be served on reusable plates and bowls, and all food waste will be composted.

Parents/guardians: if your child participates in the meal program and you would like them to bring home any leftovers, please send a reusable container with them. Please note that food should not be consumed if it has been outside of refrigeration for more than two hours.

Thank you for supporting this initiative! 🌱
