February 12

School Events

Hello Brackendale families,

As we round out a week that included tragic news from northern BC, my staff and I took time to reflect upon the strength of our educators in the building, our students and the parent community that supports us. We also recognize there is room for growth in terms of reaching out to some of our families that might be struggling and to continue to try to support all of our Brackendale learners and their parents and guardians. With that in mind, I can think of no other better way to end the week than with our Friendship Dance, which was a beautiful demonstration of kindness, compassion, role-modeling and school spirit. Thank you so much to Ms. Manke and Ms. Brant for organizing this relatively new Brackendale event. I have no doubt this is now a fixture in our school calendar, based on the smiles on everyone’s faces. We also had Michael Allen come and present to all of our students about the amazing wildlife that lives in and around the Squamish Valley. The skulls and bear skins were definitely a hit.

As we look ahead, a reminder that there is no school in session tomorrow due to the District Implementation Day, and Monday, February 16th, schools are closed for Family Day.

A “Let’s Talk” Event – Hosted by Coast Mountain Academy

Schools, families, and in some cases, entire countries, are grappling with how to navigate the interface between social media and youth. This is something we’re actively reflecting on at Coast Mountain Academy as well, and we’re inviting anyone in the Sea-to-Sky community to join us for an open, facilitated discussion on the evening of Thursday, February 26.

Many educators and parents are sensing that social media presents real challenges, yet we often lack shared language to talk about its cognitive effects, and it can be difficult to weigh the positives and negatives in a grounded, balanced way. This evening is intended to be a space to explore these questions together.

The conversation will be moderated by Court Ashbaugh, Head of Senior School at Coast Mountain Academy. There will be no formal presentation or “expert” keynote. Instead, the dialogue will come from participants, with the goal of drawing out thoughtful perspectives, shared concerns, and points of agreement and difference. We’re not aiming for tidy conclusions—just meaningful, respectful conversation.
